Castor oil is gaining popularity for its hair related benefits. Does it really aid in hair regrowth? I have been using this oil for over a year and here is my experience.
Castor oil is produced by crushing castor seeds and is a vegetable oil. It has variety of uses in foods, medicines and industries.
How to Use Castor Oil for Hair?
Probably the most important direction for using castor oil is to dilute it with another oil. Castor oil is too thick to be used alone. In fact, it is so thick that it does not flow easily. I have been mixing almond oil at equal parts. Other options would be olive oil or coconut oil. After using it for a while, you can tweak the ratio of the oils depending on your comfort. I have not been heating the mixture.
Very inexpensive. I used a combination of Patanjali Almond oil, which costs about Rs.80 per 250ml bottle. Castor oil prices range from Rs.100 to Rs.200 for 100/200ml.
- It can a little smelly. Another better smelling oil can be added to the combination if necessary.
- I sometimes leave it overnight. However, the pillows would need to be covered with something. If you apply it before shower, try giving sufficient time (1-2 hours) rather than showering immediately
I have used it over a year. Hair fall has definitely reduced. Have I experienced a hair growth? There has been a very marginal improvement in hair growth in some areas on the crown area, where the hair fall was the maximum. It probably needs a longer usage to get more benefits. So do not expect to experience a magical hair growth.
